Create Your Own Mini Garden at Home and Enjoy Fresh Natural Herbs

Growing your own food is an excellent idea, even if you have little space at home and don’t have a terrace or garden. Now you can take advantage of a space in your kitchen to create your own mini garden, and give yourself the pleasure of always having fresh and natural condiments any time of day. Here are some good ideas to help you achieve it.

Where to place the mini garden?

Any corner of your house or kitchen is potentially perfect to house your small garden. Look for a corner or wall where the project can receive sunlight and where you can place a modular vertical garden that comes pre-fabricated, ready to install and is an excellent option for its drainage system that collects excess water in a tray. This is a really comfortable and versatile option. But if you are creative and skillful with crafts you can build it to your liking with wooden modules or recyclable material.

You can also think about a mini aerial garden. It’s a perfect idea to multiply the space you have and hang your plants where you are going to need them. So, use your ingenuity; it will be your best ally to embark upon the adventure of having your own "mini garden corner".

Prepare your pots

Place a base of stones in your pots to facilitate drainage and then add a soil layer. Finally, place the organic fertilizer. Remember to place the selected seeds on the soil. The envelopes with the seeds usually indicate the quantity that you must sew and all the necessary details for their good development. On top of the seeds, place a little more soil. Put a little pressure on it to bed it in, remembering to leave between two to five centimeters so that you do not have any problems when watering your plants.

What can I plant in the mini garden?

Herbs and spices are essential to enhance the flavor of meals. The fresher they are, the more delicious they are, which is why we offer you six options that are infallible in different recipes.

  1. Orégano: This plant requires sunlight. It is very resistant, perfect for sowing in spring. Its leaves can be enjoyed for approximately five or six years. Its flavor is perfect for tomato sauces, as an olive oil flavoring, in pasta, bread and pizza, and to season pork, among other things
  2. Basil: This plant can be placed where it can receive sunlight, but not too much or too directly. It should be planted in spring, so that you can use its leaves between summer and autumn. It is not resistant to low temperatures and should be sown annually. Remember to water it constantly. Its flavor is perfect with salads, fish, egg omelets, tomato sauce, pesto, and pizzas.
  3. Rosemary: It doesn’t require much care. It should be watered occasionally and not receive much direct sunlight. Once it grows you can cut its branches and store them in a cool, dry place to use whenever you like. Perfect for seasoning roasts and stews, and flavoring oils. It also has medicinal uses.
  4. Thyme: This plant is resistant to sunlight. It doesn’t require much watering; it only requires good drainage. It is best to plant it in the autumn and, once it grows, you can use its leaves throughout the year. It is frequently used to season lamb and pork, to flavor pickles and more.
  5. Coriander: This plant requires good lighting, little watering and a temperate climate, so it is a good idea to plant it in spring and protect it from low temperatures during winter. It is harvested by cutting the stems and leaves from the base of the plant. Its flavor is perfect for soups, juices, salads, stews, dressings, pico de gallo, marinades, fish, etc.
  6. Parsley: It is a very resistant plant, only requiring a moist soil rich in nutrients. Its seeds must be soaked before being planted. You will be able to start using its fresh leaves after three months. It goes very well in Middle Eastern salads, tabbouleh, tortillas, flavored butter and fish, and it combines perfectly with garlic.
